Welcome to Hort-Pro

Fall is now upon us.  Let's wrap up the garden season with our experts before we have to wrap ourselves in layers of clothing to even image ourselves out of doors.

Wes Porter gives us lists of Scented bulbs including Tulips, Crocus, Hyacinths, Daffodils, Narcissus and Muscari.  He also tells us about the new Chrysanthemum, 'Autumn Red' out this fall that will withstand the climate in the Toronto area and flowers year after year.  In addition Mr. Porter provides a list of nature walks and garden tours in the Toronto Area.  Outdoing himself this month in the Horticultural news department he has provided a wealth of information on anything to do with gardening news, from Landscaping, Flowers and Insects right on down to composting Mycology.  Read: City Gardening A Monthly Newsletter for Toronto Gardeners.

In his October issue Mr. Porter gives us tips on pruning the phlox and butterfly bushes.  He also informs us that now is the time for dividing the hardy perennials such as Daylilies and hostas.  We are reminded to make our preparations to repel mice, rabbits, deer and dogs so that we can keep them out of the garden over winter.  Read over his reminders about what herbs and tender plants to bring in before the first bite of frost and how to prepare your pots and indoor planters.  We learn also the effect of carotenoids and anthocyanins on the leaves and how they cause the leaves to change colour.  Find out where the tradition of the pumpkin comes from and the other haunting traditionsof the season in October's issue of City Gardening A Monthly Newsletter for Toronto Gardeners.

Courtesy of Turf & Recreation Magazine we offer you the The Duffer.....the modern art of child rearing where we get the often whimsical and always funny take of Ian Robinson on life with kids and the fine art of parenting.  For more fun join Ian in a moment of matrimonial panic in The Duffer...my wife at middle age.

Bruce Zimmerman has tips on how to preserve your tender bulbs over winter.  Find out how to keep your Dahlias, Cannas and others to plant a beautiful display again come spring in Storage of Summer Bulbs.

This next article is a must if you have a water garden.  Learn to safely handle your tropical and hardy varieties of water lilies and give your fish the treatment they need to swim on next spring in Mr. Zimmerman's Closing your Garden Pond.
