Welcome to Hort-Pro

                                                                  Winter 2003

Welcome to the first edition of the new year of The Hort-Pro, our on-line, e-magazine!

January presents all of us with countless challenges. As gardeners, we are frustrated with the blanket of white that has, most definitely, arrived in Canada. Yet for those in the business end of the gardening/landscaping industry, we are as busy as ever getting ready for the upcoming season.

Yet, the only warm breezes that have been caressing the staff around here are from the patio heaters on the trade show floor! Dreaming of warmer weather has become the new mantra as the deep freeze continues across most of North America. We are now into  our 15th day of below 0 degrees C, with no end in sight.

This month's first article features our new Editor, Bruce Zimmerman writing about : I am a Canadian Garden .    It's emphasis is based on the ability of Canadians to assimilate many different elements of style and design from all around the world and create a truly "Canadian" landscape.

Wes Porter contributes two months worth of City Gardening. January begins with the greeting of Kung Hei Fat Choi – a Happy and Prosperous New Year. This is the year of the goat --and Wes believes that this is "the year to get a gardener's goat".  Excellent because the goat represents all that is elegant and artistic in Chinese culture. What else should one expect from gardening?

Once again Wes provides us with plenty of great tidbits of information --and a follow up on the fate of the 'St. Phocas the Gardener'.

February starts with Groundhogs and winter chills ,while for Valentines Day We Say It With Snails and Indoors Look at Amaryllis. Naturally,  all of our usual features, including: ‘Gardening Web,’ Horticultural Happenings’ and ‘Gardening in the Headlines.’

....use your imagination is the plea from the Duffer, as he fondly recalls the days when kids 'invented' their own toys, and didn't expect the incredibly expensive toys and gifts that the catalog companies bombard us with, especially at Christmas time.

Don't forget ..... for an early taste of spring, don't miss the Toronto flower and garden show: Canada Blooms, running in Toronto, March 12 - 16 th. This year's salute is "A symphony of Gardens"
