Welcome to Hort-Pro

May 2001

Long evenings, dandelions, the occasional mosquito and (for us) the "busy season", we know its May.  This month our usual contingent of writers have provided us with their thoughts on flowers, fertilizer and food.

We lead off John Morley's article about Shade Tree Fertilization, this article is also an excellent primer for fertilizer use in general for those of us who forget from year to year.  If your Acer Platanoides Crimson King is drooping and faded, this is the article for you.

Wes Porter suggests that we "tiptoe through the tulips, perennials, annuals, herbs, roses, vines..." in his May issue of the City Gardening as well as providing some thought about the "Garden of Hope" proposed for High Park in Toronto by the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.  A bit of history about High Park and its gardens also makes for good long weekend reading.

Bruce Zimmerman provides us with some excellent information for planting, suckering and generally growing good tomatoes. With a little help from his daughters Zebrina and Calluna, he also has a few suggestions for favorite varieties including names like Sweet Millions, Aviro and Green Grape.

Finally, the irreverent Duffer has "The Willies" - I remember laughing out loud more than once when this article first appeared in Turf & Rec magazine.

With Victoria Day in Canada and Memorial Day in the U.S.,  have a happy first long weekend of summer!
